“The script, I always believe,
is the foundation of everything”
SCREENWRITER'S RETREAT
Each RUC production is led by Creatives in every aspect. So, in between each production, we run a short screenwriter's retreat to explore screenwriting and find the next RUC production script.
Across two individual days, Creatives will delve into the craft of screenwriting: building ideas, learning about structure, pacing and character, and getting to know other young, aspiring screenwriters. Everyone will come out of the retreat with their own short screenplay - or at least having started one. Then there is a window for script submissions, and one screenplay will be selected as the film to be produced by our next team of Reels Up Creatives.
Interested? Keep your eyes peeled on our website and socials for announcements about upcoming retreats.
WHAT TO EXPECT...
INT. SCREENWRITERS RETREAT. DAY.
The retreat is about learning all about the craft of screenwriting. A screenplay is a unique form of writing, and it is very different from a stage play or short story. There are certain structures and techniques that are unique to screenplays, and they are each important in ensuring the story is clear and effective from the page through to the screen.
Great films start with a great script - but screenwriting is sometimes overlooked as its own specialist craft. The Screenwriter's Retreat is designed to explore the craft, focusing on what makes a screenplay unique, and what techniques you can use to tell a cinematic story.
More specific details about the content of the 2 days will be shared when applications for each project open.
THE FINISHED SCREENPLAYS
The Retreat isn't about polished, final drafts. It is about searching for story and starting to structure it for film. After the Retreat, there will be a few weeks where Creatives are encouraged to carry on writing their screenplays. Then, if they decide that they are finished, we will have a Script Submission Period.
If a Creative wants to submit their screenplay (no one is obliged to, of course!) then they will be considered for the next RUC production script. Our RUC team will read through all of the scripts, offering feedback to each and every one.
The script that is selected will then go into production with our next group of Creatives, and the writer will have an automatic place on that project.
